A number of the parishes which are listed as Prebendal Churches formed a component part of a 'union' of parishes in order to form a single prebend with a more sufficient income to support the prebendary or canon. In the case of Appropriated Churches it is important to realise that most often it was the rectory tithes (garbal teinds) that were appropriated, leaving the vicarage tithes to the cleric who was, de facto, the parish priest.
