Parish Church:   OS Ref: NGR NG 806757         H.E.S. No: NG87NW 2       Dedication: St Maelrubhe

The ancient church of this parish was dedicated to St Maelrubha and was, perhaps, erected by him in the seventh-century. It stood near the centre of the burial -ground at Gairloch. There are now no remains whatever of it. If it was, ideed, connected to St Maelrubha and his disciples then the church of Gairloch has a very ancient pedigree indeed.

A 'new' church is said to have been built in 1751 to replace one that possibly dated to pre-Reformation times. It was thatched but had become ruinous by 1791, when the present church was built.

The church, both in parsonage and vicarage, became a common church of the cathedral of Ross shortly after 1255/6 and so it remained up to the Reformation. This was one of the churches of North Argyll which was given to the Diocese of Ross to augment its income.
